Grote Kerk Breda

The Grote Kerk Breda has a rich history and a beautiful future. In addition to being a national heritage site, it is a top monument in Brabant and part of the Museum in the Netherlands. The Grote Kerk connects its collection and stories with current events and contemporary art.

Cultural hotspot

The Grote Kerk Breda has a clear vision for the future: to make the church a place in the heart of the city where different generations come together and find inspiration.

The church achieves this with an innovative programme that allows visitors to view the age-old stories of the church through the lens of modern knowledge. To this end, the organisation collaborates with a wide network of artists, entrepreneurs, educational institutions, and cultural and social organisations.

From 14 April to 25 August, the exhibition Re-Belle can be seen in the church, for which artist Maria Roosen has added colourful, contemporary accents to the monumental church.

750 years of history

The rich history of the Grote Kerk dates back to the Middle Ages. In the 750 years since, there has been constant building, renovation, restoration, and refurbishment at this site. Prayers have been offered, grief has been expressed, celebrations have taken place, and admiration has been given.

We will take you on a bird's-eye view through the history and past the most important monuments in the church.

Restoration and maintenance

A monument like the Grote Kerk Breda is never finished. Maintenance and restoration are part of daily life. Currently, there is a restoration project that will last until 2027. These restorations are carried out with the most innovative equipment, but are finished artisanal by skilled sculptors.
