Free activities in Breda

  • Activity
  • Children
Everyone enjoys getting out and about from time to time. But for those living on a tight budget, it can be quite a challenge. That's why we have put together a list of outings in Breda that you can do completely for free, with or without children.

Blind Walls Gallery

You can find them all over the city: the almost 150 murals of the Blind Walls Gallery. It's like a museum on the street. Each Blind Wall tells a story of the city, so walking or cycling past the murals will give you a lot of insights into Breda.
There are various routes of different lengths for walking or cycling.

Download the Explore Breda App

With the Explore Breda App you can instantly download three great walks through Breda. You can choose the historical route Explore Royal Breda, the creative route Explore Creative Breda or the green route Explore Green Breda.
You can even combine them and if you're near one of the Blind Walls, you'll also see them in the app.

Visiting the museum

Did you know that Breda has several smaller museums where you can just walk in without having to pay an entrance fee?

  • Bierreclamemuseum - The largest collection of beer advertisements in Europe can be found at Haagweg. On Sunday afternoons, live folk music is often played here.
  • Clock Museum - This clock shop on Catharinastraat has such a unique collection that the owners have turned it into a museum collection.
  • Queen Wilhelmina Pavilion - In the former Rijks HBS on Kasteelplein, there is a continuous exhibition about the Castle of Breda and its residents throughout the centuries.
  • Indisch Museum - Stories and objects about the Indonesian culture and the history of the Dutch East Indies
  • De Rijf - Local history museum
  • Paulus van Daesdonck - Local history museum (with a treasure hunt for children)
  • Princenhaags Museum - Local history museum with exhibitions of artists linked to Princenhage
  • Yellow House in Princenhage - Changing art exhibitions
  • NEXT - the freely accessible exhibition space of the Stedelijk Museum Breda. Here you often find exhibitions created together with institutions from Breda.

Great Church Breda

The Grote Kerk Breda has been the icon of the city for 500 years and is free to visit for most of the year. A building with a rich history and a bright future. The cultural programme connects the history with the stories of today. There are regularly changing exhibitions.

Cycle past the mini libraries.

Do you like reading? Then take a nice bike ride along the minibiebs in Breda. There are surprisingly many! You can find them throughout the city. You choose a book, take it home with you and when you're done, you can exchange it for another book from the same minibieb or a different one. This way, you let books that would otherwise stay on the shelf wander throughout Breda.
There are minibiebs with books for adults, specifically for children or mixed.

Walking along art

Perhaps you have wondered what those crawling red ants in Willemstraat mean. Here's a hint: it's an artwork by artist Florentijn Hofman. There's more to tell, but we'll do that in our Art Route through the city centre. With this walking route, you'll explore the centre and discover the stories behind the many statues and other artworks.

Into the forest!

Going to the forest is always a good idea. Each season there is always something new to discover. In every forest area, you can find routes from Staatsbosbeheer. For example, the Mastbos has a Sniffing Route, where you can walk 4 kilometres with your dog in the off-leash area. Follow the signs with a blue dog's head. As an extra treat for the dog, there is a dog pond.

Gnome Trail
For young children, the Gnome Trail is highly recommended. Gnome Daantje shows the way and gives the children tasks along the way.

Play Forest
Almost every child gets excited about building, climbing, and getting messy. That's why they can have free rein in Play Forest de Boeverijen in the Mastbos. The Brakkenbos in the Haagse Beemden is also a great place for adventurous kids.

Petting Zoos

Fun for kids, but actually for everyone! Visit a petting zoo! Take a walk, feed (only if allowed!) and pet the animals, and maybe even lend a hand. Not only fun, but also educational. A nice outing to enjoy the outdoors.

In Breda and the surrounding villages, there are more petting zoos than you might think. Discover them all.

Playing and picnicking

Breda has four municipal playgrounds with supervision. They are located at Abeelstraat (Tuinzigt), Heuvelbrink (Heuvel), Ploegstraat (Breda South), and Somerweide (Haagse Beemden). You can also find a playground for endless fun in Valkenberg Park.

Picnicking
What could be better than finding a nice spot on a sunny day and enjoying a picnic. We have listed the best picnic spots. Plenty to choose from.

Belcrum Beach

Do you want to go to the beach? Then you don't have to go far because Belcrum Beach is open all summer season. Enjoy putting your feet in the sand while the children have fun with beach games. There is always a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays, and live music on Sundays. Wednesday afternoons are reserved especially for children with extra activities for them.
