Performance 'Circle Mirror Transformation' at Chassé Theater

Circle Mirror Transformation is a performance by Loek de Bakker, based on an award-winning play by American playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker.

Information

Five completely different people attend a theatre course in the local community centre for six weeks. Under the guidance of teacher Marti, the participants engage in seemingly innocent exercises and role-plays. What begins as a playful training quickly turns into a revealing process where the participants increasingly show more of themselves. Personal stories come to light, and relationships among them become stronger. The outside world gradually seeps into the classroom, while within the safe walls of the course, lives inevitably become intertwined. We see five people, against the odds, searching for connection - which results in witty and especially moving theatre.

Director Loek de Bakker: “When I read this text, I immediately thought it was a brilliant idea. Five strangers cut off from the rest of the world, desperately seeking connection with one another. In this individualistic time, this is a recognisable story full of humour, pain, and hope about lost individuals trying to find meaning collectively. In Circle Mirror Transformation, it is beautifully illustrated with few words how awkward it can all be, this human experience.”
