Haagdijken

Rough, bustling and diverse. That are Haagdijken. The Haagdijk, one of the oldest shopping streets in Breda, used to connect the city with Princenhage. In the past, traders, breweries and shipyards were located here. Nowadays, you can find specialty shops, eateries and cafes with various cultural backgrounds on the Haagdijken.

Look up at the Haagdijk!

Just like in many other historical cities, many buildings on Haagdijk had names in the Middle Ages. Instead of numbers, these names were painted on the facades.

To make the names of the buildings visible again, Klaartje Scheer created stylised hanging signs for about 25 buildings referring to the old names. Eloi Koreman designed the various brackets. Most of them are hanging about 3 to 4 metres high, so make sure to look up as you walk around here.
