Signboards on the Haagdijk
At 25 buildings on Haagdijk, there are hanging signs that refer to the original name or function of the building.
Just like in many other historical cities, many buildings along the Haagdijk had names during the Middle Ages. These were painted on the facades instead of numbers. Unfortunately, all those names have disappeared.
To make the names of the buildings visible again, stylised signs have been hung at about 25 buildings along the Haagdijk that refer to the old names. Most of them hang about 3 to 4 metres high. All these buildings house shops or catering establishments. The only building where the original name correlates with the current shop is at 'De Zilveren Vis'. It currently houses a fishing tackle shop.
The signs were designed by Klaartje Scheer, and the various hanging brackets were created by Eloi Koreman.
