Tips from the locals of Breda

No one knows Breda better than the locals. They often know best where to find that undiscovered spot in nature or which restaurant you definitely shouldn't miss during your visit. We asked some local entrepreneurs for the secret tips they always share with their guests.

    Hidden gems

Near Terheijden lies the Linie van het Munnikenhof. This is a peaceful part of the Zuiderwaterlinie where no fighting took place. You can enjoy cycling and walking here.

On the southern side of Breda, you will find the hidden nature and recreation area ’t Zand near Alphen, which has a lovely swimming pond. It borders the Chaamse forests where numerous walking and cycling routes guide you through the most beautiful spots.

    Sustainable places

The Bird Rehabilitation Centre in Zundert rescues native birds and mammals. Stroll through the bird enclosures in the nature education garden or pay a visit to the nature shop. You can also book a guided tour or workshop with a group by appointment. Are you more of a horse fan? Go horseback riding at The Fjord Horse and enjoy a woodland ride on horseback!

A relatively unknown place in Breda is Haveneiland: urban, industrial, and trendy. Here you will find the city beach Belcrum Beach where you can enjoy (live) music with a drink. At Pier15, you can skateboard, STEK is an area with artists and entrepreneurs, and it features cool food spots.

    Food and drink

Tastes differ, but according to locals, there are indeed a number of delicious eateries you must visit. Grab a nice cup of coffee, breakfast, or lunch in the morning at Sip First, settle down on the terrace at Ginnekenmarkt in the afternoon, and enjoy a nice dinner in the evening at Porta Sud, Rodeo, or at Red Apple restaurant.

In Teteringen, you can get delicious (local) products such as bread and pastries, breakfast, lunch, and meals at De Jong Deli. Or you can order products from your favourite local specialty shop at De Vers Mannen. They deliver products from the baker, butcher, fishmonger, and greengrocer right to your home! In Terheijden, you will find Restaurant De Buren.

Located in a unique spot by the Houtse Meer, Restaurant het Houtse Meer is a perfect stop during your cycling route for a walk around the lake. Nearby, you can also dine at the family-friendly Pannenkoekenhuis Koeckers. In Alphen, you will find the best Indonesian restaurant in Brabant and the surrounding area: Bunga Melati. A local tip for when you are in Zundert is to eat at Bij De Nonnen

    Special activities

Cycling to Belgium? It’s possible from Breda! From Duivelsbruglaan in ‘t Ginneken, take the cycle path along the river Mark and head south. This beautiful path leads all the way to Belgium. If you choose the Galderseweg instead of this cycle path, you will pass the stunning Bouvigne Castle.

In Zundert, there is a living art centre on the birthplace of the famous artist Vincent van Gogh. The Vincent van Gogh House tells stories about the life and work of Vincent van Gogh in an interactive way.

Enjoy a lovely round trip on the Singels of Breda during the summer. Or choose another nice sailing route around Breda.
