STRAAT KUNST MUSEUM in Stedelijk Museum Breda

For once, the walls of Blind Walls Gallery move from outside to inside. With STREET ART MUSEUM, the street museum and the museum on Boschstraat join forces. Starting from remarkable stories from Boschstraat, 13 street artists bring colour to the museum walls.

Information

For over ten years, Blind Walls Gallery has transformed the city into a living museum with spectacular murals. Currently, more than 170 works by (inter)national artists tell the story of Breda’s past, present, and future.

Now, 13 street artists are taking over the museum. Rob van Dijck, Willehad Eilers, ESPO, Handiedan, Joren Joshua, Otecki, Pink Painter, Reskate, Danny Rumbl, Rutger Termohlen, Toscanabanana, Super A, and others are transforming the walls with captivating murals, based on the people and stories from the Boschstraat – and there are quite a few.

Elvis, Joep & Bloody Mary
From the Fury of Haultepenne to the notorious suitcase murder – the Boschstraat is full of tumultuous stories.

Remarkable figures have left their mark on its history: from ‘Bloody Mary’ Read and Adriaan van der Donck to porn director Lasse Braun, the iconic lollipop of Joep, and even Elvis Presley and his manager Colonel Tom Parker.

These murals bring these and many other stories to life, with a modern twist. The exhibition also addresses current themes, such as street harassment.

Boschstraat: then & now
The Boschstraat has been bustling for centuries. Travelers, pilgrims, merchants, artists, and beggars crossed paths here, heading towards or being expelled from the city. The street is named after the road leading to ’s-Hertogenbosch, with the impressive Boschpoort as the gateway to the city. Until the sixteenth century, the street was also known as Gasthuyseynde. Those arriving late at the city gate found shelter in the guest house 'De Beyerd', which became an Oudemannenhuis in 1798.

Today, the Boschstraat breathes a mix of tradition and innovation. Well-known and beloved places like Gonnie’s shop, the Comics Specialist, Fop-Sjop, and Café de Beyerd go hand in hand with modern hotspots like Hizmet Bakery, ECHT BREAD, KAMU, and Jack & Jacky's. A diverse street where people from different backgrounds gather.

Of course, starting at Stedelijk Museum Breda: the place to discover and experience the art and history of the city.
