Nature around Breda

Breda in the green: Centuries-old forests, idyllic fens and streams, soothing heath: the area around Breda has it all. The greenery was established by the barons, which is why Breda can now boast some of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the region.

    The Mastbos

The pride of Breda is the Mastbos. The Mastbos owes its name to the many Scots pines, which were once referred to as mast trees. The trees of the Mastbos were planted in 1515, making it the oldest planted forest in the Netherlands. With Castle Bouvigne, the monumental trees, and wide avenues, the Mastbos is a lovely place to visit, whether by bike or on foot.

    The Markdal

The Markdal owes its name to the stream De Mark, which flows through the meadows south of Breda. To prevent waterlogging, Staatsbosbeheer has let the Mark meander again. The nature areas along the riverbanks capture excess water. This gives nature every opportunity.

    Nature areas around Breda

The forests in De Baronie each tell a story. You can find peace and space in the Chaamse Bossen, where deer graze and birds of prey soar over the treetops. A surprising place is the Strijbeekse Heide, a heathland with many ponds amid Scots pines. The Liesbos – the largest summer oak forest in our country – boasts monumental avenues, the structure of which dates back to the 17th century. The Ulvenhoutse Bos is known for its rich flora and is carpeted in spring with, among other things, wood anemones and yellow rattle. The Ruchphense Bossen feature large sand dunes, which are quite remarkable to see. And then there's the Pannenhoef. When you are there, you immediately understand why Vincent van Gogh developed his love for nature here.

    The Biesbosch

If you visit the Breda region, you should not miss De Biesbosch. The freshwater tidal area of De Biesbosch is a rare phenomenon. You can experience both ebb and flow there. But that’s not all: the area is beautiful to explore by boat. The combination of views on the horizon, stunning flora and fauna, and ample space for recreation is unmatched anywhere else. Take the electric bike from Breda, and you'll be in De Biesbosch in no time. The route there - via Terheijden and Den Hout - is a fantastic area to cycle through. As you ride along the Markkanaal - just outside Breda - you can enjoy the nature that the Breda area has to offer.
