On Sunday 15 December, the nature guides of IVN Mark &amp; Donge will be exploring the forest and dunes. Is this area named after the dovecote that once stood here? Or after Willem, Lord of Duivenvoorde, a powerful man from the late Middle Ages, who owned castles and lands in this region? No one knows for sure. <br><br>Since 2004, there has been a 'dovecote' here again, a limestone art piece. 
This area boasts a lot of variation in the landscape; the sand dunes, known as the Woeste Zee, are surrounded by sea pines with enormous cones. Some areas are marshy and boggy due to peat extraction. There are ponds and water features, but also a beech forest and meadows.
<br><br>As in many forests, a few years ago, part of the coniferous trees and American oaks were felled here to create more open space and allow a more natural forest to develop with native broadleaf trees. If you want to see how the forest is changing as a result, join us for this winter walk.
