What is there to do in de Biesbosch?

  • nature
De Biesbosch is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in our country. It is a water-rich area that was formed over 600 years ago following de St. Elisabethsvloed. In 1971, de Biesbosch became a true freshwater area through the closure of the Haringvliet. The status of protected natural area was granted to de Biesbosch in 1994. Here you can spot special animals such as the beaver, the sea eagle, and the osprey. There is plenty to experience in de Biesbosch for young and old alike. On this page, you can read about the various ways to discover and enjoy de Biesbosch.

Biesbosch centers of the MuseumEiland and Dordrecht

Visitor centres are the perfect place to start your day in de Biesbosch. There are 2 in Biesbosch, those of the MuseumEiland and Dordrecht.

Biesbosch Centre MuseumEiland Werkendam

In Werkendam you will find the MuseumEiland which features, among other things, an extensive permanent exhibition about the present, past, and future of the national park De Biesbosch.
There is a special treasure hunt through the exhibition for children. From the MuseumEiland, boats and cruises depart, and various cycling and walking routes start.  At the information desk, you can ask all your questions about de Biesbosch.

Biesbosch Centre Dordrecht

There is also a Biesbosch Centre in Dordrecht with an exhibition and information desk. You can find more information about this on the Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht website.

Walking routes

You have a wide range of walking routes in de Biesbosch that cross through the nature reserve. These routes allow you to spot the animals that live here and surround yourself with the stunning nature. There are various spots where you can take a walk, for example in the Polder or more sheltered in the forest.

Cycling routes

If you prefer to explore de Biesbosch by bicycle, that's also possible. Plenty of cycling routes! Please note that you may sometimes need to cross via a ferry. You can cycle through the nature reserve but also to and through the villages in the area, such as Geertruidenberg and Drimmelen. A popular cycling trip is the 'round trip Biesbosch'. This route is over 55 kilometres long and takes you right through the stunning nature of the Biesbosch with the most beautiful views. You can find the round trip Biesbosch and other cycling routes on the website of Beleef de Biesbosch.

Discover de Biesbosch by boat

De Biesbosch is naturally famous for its water. After all, it is a river delta. The best way to experience this natural area is by boating through it. This can be done in a rented boat or with a boat tour, but also organized with a guide or a forest ranger. If you go boating yourself, you need to be careful about where it is permitted to sail in de Biesbosch. Because it is a protected natural area, you cannot access all places.
There is also an accessible boat specifically for people in a wheelchair.

Beaver safari

One of the most well-known inhabitants of de Biesbosch is the beaver. In the 1980s, the first beavers were reintroduced into Dutch nature after having become extinct in the area. The beaver has quickly adapted to life in de Biesbosch, and there are now over 300! This rodent is active from dusk onwards.

During special beaver safaris, you can discover these remarkable animals together with a guide on a whisper boat. The guide will tell you about the behaviour and life of the beaver. The beaver safaris depart from Drimmelen during the summer months.

Overnight stays

If you'd rather spend a few days in de Biesbosch, you can also stay overnight. This can be in one of the hotels or B&B’s in the area. But you'll experience the nature truly if you camp in de Biesbosch itself.

Follow the white-tailed sea eagles and osprey!

The sea eagle and osprey are the most remarkable birds of the area and even of the Netherlands. Both species have independently found their way to de Biesbosch.

Since 2010, the sea eagle has been successfully breeding again in de Biesbosch. It is also called the 'vliegende deur' because of its wingspan of nearly 2.5 meters.

The osprey has only been nesting in de Biesbosch since 2016. This eagle is somewhat smaller than the sea eagle and is therefore harder to spot. In spring, you can follow the nests of both species live via the Beleef de Lente website. With the webcam, you have a perfect view of the nests. This way, you can enjoy these special birds without disturbing them!
