Green initiatives in Breda
Boerderij Wolfslaar
Boerderij Wolfslaar is the place where you can not only enjoy among the animals, but also learn about nature, sustainability and circularity. Coordinator Erik tells more about the farm where the recycling of food contributes to a greener future. So here you really learn how small steps can make a big impact on the environment.
Princenhage Plukroute
If you love walking in greenery and enjoy actively looking around, then take the Princenhage Plukroute! Local residents maintain a walking route here. They take care of the greenery and place the posts all by themselves.
Community Garden at BUas
Are you a student, an engaged local resident, or do you just have a green thumb? Then you can get to work in the Community Garden of BUas! This is where people from Breda come together to learn about growing (edible) plants and to take a break.
Wijkdeal
If you want to green your street in Breda, you can do so, for example, through a neighbourhood deal! The residents of Nieuwe Boschstraat have started such a neighbourhood deal. The agreement? They must maintain the planted greenery themselves. Not only is this good for biodiversity, but such a neighbourhood deal also brings residents closer together! Check out the video for more.
Edible picking playground
A place where children can learn about different crops while having fun, and even pick them! That's what Pluk's Speeltuin is all about. Here, Lisa and the local residents of Tuinzigt have been working for several years to green the playground. And they are far from done! With your help, we can turn this playground into a green oasis!
More green roofs with Green Revolution
Maybe you've already discovered some green roofs in Breda. There's a good chance that this is the work of Green Revolution! At the city nursery, they develop the basis for a green roof which they then install on the roofs in Breda. The result? A cooling effect in the summer without using air conditioning and less strain on the sewage system when it rains.
Plastic with a second life at PlaSTiEK Breda
Long live plastic! At least if it’s up to PlaSTiEK Breda, as they give old plastic a new life by transforming this material into building materials for things like furniture! Jilles from PlaSTiEK shares more about it.
Repair Cafés
A concept that is still unknown to many: Repair Cafés! Here you can go to repair all your broken items. A group of (expert) volunteers lovingly makes your belongings usable again. Breda also has a number of Repair Cafés. Great to join as a volunteer or, of course, to give your items a second life!
Exchange initiatives in Breda
Instead of buying something new, you can also choose to swap your items! In Breda, there are various swapping initiatives: from mini-libraries to personal care items. In different parts of Breda, there’s even a clothing bag that circulates, where you can take something out and give something back in return. Check out the video below to see what’s possible!
Use of by-products such as ZoetZuur&Zout does
In Breda, there are various initiatives and enterprises that want to engage in circular practices with certain products. ZoetZuur&Zout is a perfect example of what can be done with waste streams in the food industry that are not used. For instance, jam is made from fruit that doesn't make it to the supermarket, and the waste streams from that process are used again for chicken feed!
Secondhandstore fof plants
Suppose you have an old plant that no longer has a place in your home or garden. Throwing it away would be a shame, right? Especially if the plant is still healthy. At the Tuinplantenkringloop, you can go with all your old plants and it's also possible to take new plants home! This way, we treat the greenery we bring into our homes more consciously.
Community garden
In Breda there are various options to start a community vegetable garden. For example, this can be done through the Bredase Amateur Tuinder Association. Similarly, five friends from Breda decided to do the same. The result? A mountain of fresh vegetables and fruit that taste much better than those from the supermarket and a genuine sense of community!
