Sint Annastraat

One of the most characteristic streets in Breda is the Sint Annastraat. A vibrant street where more and more artisanal shops are establishing themselves. The picturesque character of the Sint Annastraat has been preserved all this time: only small-scale shops with their own character and identity settle there. The Sint Annastraat is also known as the nicest little street in Breda.

After the city fire in 1490, several new streets were built in the city centre, including the Sint Annastraat. Did you know that the Sint Annastraat used to be called the Korte Nieuwstraat? The name Korte Nieuwstraat indicates that this street was the counterpart of the current Nieuwstraat on the west side of the city. The purpose of building this street was to improve the traffic circulation on the east side of the city, especially on days when the Market was blocked by stalls.
