‘De laatste der Argonauten’ was originally created by Lucas van der Meer for an exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary of Queen Wilhelmina's reign. After the exhibition, the sculpture disappeared into the cellar of the Rijksmuseum. Years later, it was returned damaged to the artist. Following his death, in consultation with his widow and the municipality of Breda, the sculpture was cast in bronze. Dio Roovers, a Breda artist and colleague of Van der Meer at the restoration of the Great Church in Breda, took care of the restoration and preparation for casting. This is how it came into the possession of the municipality of Breda. Other names for the sculpture include Love, Jason and Medea and/or Eros and Psyche.
