Sustainable initiatives

  • Sustainable
In Breda, you will find a whole range of sustainable initiatives. Paddling through the canals to clean up waste, companies that produce furniture from plastic, and active residents who ensure that the city becomes even cleaner. Curious about these initiatives? On this page, you will find a collection.

The Green Submarine

Monique from The Green Submarine has introduced the ideal Christmas tree: the Chamber Pine. What’s great about this Pine is that it can stay up all year round. During Christmas, you can fill the Pine with baubles, and during Easter with little chicks and Easter decorations. Is it your birthday? Fill it with flags!

What’s so nice about the Chamber Pine is that it doesn't lose its needles. No hassle with cleaning up every day then ;)

The Chamber Pine is available at The Green Submarine in Breda!

No Waste Army

The No Waste Army is committed to reducing the waste of vegetables and fruit. Supermarkets still reject a lot of vegetables and fruit that, in their view, do not belong on the shelves due to their weight or shape. Chefs associated with the No Waste Army turn these into the tastiest juices, soups, and sauces. If you become a member of the No Waste Army, you will receive a box of these delicious, durable products at home every quarter.
Winner of the Great Green Idea 2023 from NPO 1.

Litter cleanup

Breda has a whole lot of active residents who are committed to reducing litter on the streets. Join a cleanup event in your own neighbourhood or in a nature area and help make Breda cleaner! With small actions, you can already make a difference. For example, by picking up litter from your pavement. Curious about all the initiatives? We have created an overview.

DoneerRing

Deposit should not go in the bin. Plastic bottles shouldn't either. For this reason, the DoneerRing was conceived. A national initiative, but first launched in Breda! An iron ring around bins where people can place their deposit bottles, so that others can collect them in a dignified manner for the deposit.

Plasticcatcher in the canal

The municipality of Breda has implemented a plastic catcher in the waterway of the Mark. With the plastic catcher located at Belcrum Beach, Breda is taking a new step to combat plastic pollution in the canals and improve water quality. The plastic catcher is a floating arm that guides the waste that enters the Mark via the canals into a catch basket. The plastic catcher is positioned on the inside of the waterway because most of the floating debris is blown there by the wind, while boats navigate on the outside. The basket is emptied once a week.

NK Tile Tipping

From 21 March to 31 October, we are holding the National Tile Flipping Championship. Which municipality will flip the most tiles and replace them with greenery? Breda is also participating again this year. Will you help to replace tiles with grass, flower beds, trees, and facade gardens? This will make Breda more climate-resilient, more pleasant for insects and animals, cooler on warm days, and much more beautiful!

Breda maakt mij blij

Driven by the need for positivity, Breda maakt mij blij decided in the spring of 2020 to help farmers and growers who were left with a surplus of products due to the coronavirus crisis. Peonies and asparagus were sold via a Tikkie, but Breda Maakt Mij Blij soon grew into a platform with large-scale rescue actions such as those for the Vierdaagse gladiolus, the wine from the nuns, and the pumpkins from farmer Chris.

Zero Waste

Drastically reduce waste. That is the mission of Zero Waste. Because: the less you buy items that are packaged, the less you throw away. This hospitality industry in Breda is participating in this initiative.

The Fridge by Curio

Anyone who has leftover food or is in need of food can use the fridge at Curio. The Fridge is an idea from vocational students of the hospitality course at Curio Hotelschool Breda. A fun and useful, but above all sustainable phenomenon from abroad. The school hopes to combat food waste with this initiative. Several companies from Breda are already participating, including the Municipality of Breda.

The fridge can be found on school days from 10:00 to 16:00 at the Curio Hotelschool located at Markendaalseweg 35 in Breda.

Boer&NLekker

With Boer&NLekker you combine shopping at the farm with the convenience of ordering online. Under the motto 'The finest fresh produce, straight from farmers' hands into your shopping basket', fifteen farmers in and around Breda work together to offer their fresh products. These range from creamy farmer's yoghurt and tender beef from Blonde D'Aquitaine cattle to artisanal aged abbey cheese and Shanghai pak choi.
Here’s how it works:

  • Download the Local Heroes app
  • Order your fresh groceries from various farm shops
  • Pick up your order on Friday afternoon or Saturday at Farm Shop Van den Kieboom, Rietdijk 4 in Breda

Boer&NLekker is an initiative of Agrifirm, a national platform that connects about ten thousand farming businesses.

BeterBoompje

Every year, we throw away about 2.5 million Christmas trees in the Netherlands. What a waste! BeterBoompje wants to replace these disposable trees with real Christmas trees that can be replanted (and reused). Do you also think that the holidays can be a bit more sustainable? Then take the first step towards a green Christmas and choose a BeterBoompje this year.
