BRIK Festival 2024

  • Children
  • Grote Kerk Breda
Children aged 0 to 12 can enjoy cultural delights again at the BRIK Festival in Breda from Wednesday 19th to Sunday 23rd June. How about a special collaboration between the Breda company "de Stilte" and opera singer Kelly Poukens? Or what about "Sous la table", a performance where parents and the youngest visitors literally crawl under the table. The eighth edition of the Brabant International Children's Festival (BRIK) this year features several fixed stages where performances can be enjoyed. Performances of dance and non-verbal theatre are scheduled in the Stilte theatre, the Chassé Theatre, the Grote Kerk, the Bisdom in the Veemarktstraat, and the city park Valkenberg.

Start at the Valkenberg

The festival starts Wednesday afternoon 19 June at 14:30 with a free performance in the park. There is Entre-Cordes, where a juggler plays a ball with a rope and mingles in the game of a harpist. Their play merges into a fascinating show. Throughout these days, several free performances and workshops can be found in the park. During the weekend, an interactive playground made of recycled materials will be placed opposite the T-huis in the city park Valkenberg, where children can explore.

Premiere come and go

Coming and Going - the performance by De Stilte and singer Kelly Poukens - will premiere at the festival. In this production about meeting and saying goodbye, paper roles play a special supporting role. They form trees, walls, curtains - and whatever the viewer sees in them, between which the dancer and singer meet or hide.

"Children get a lot out of it," Kelly knows from the rehearsals and try-outs. "They will shake hands with each other afterwards." Their parents see stories on different levels. "During the production process, which lasted more than two years, a lot has happened in the world. From not shaking hands during Covid, to the outbreak of the war in Ukraine." Jack: "It is also the play between perpetrator and victim, who switch roles."

Affordable for everyone

In order to ensure that the performances are accessible to everyone, BRIK is implementing the Pay-what-you-can principle this year. As a visitor to the performances, you can choose from a reduced rate, an advisory rate, and a solidarity rate. Opting for the latter means that you support the Brik Festival wholeheartedly.

For older children, performances such as Tunelis, Archipelago, A Journey to the End of Boredom (Voyage au bout de l’ennui), and Yo soy are scheduled. The complete programme can be found at brikfestival.nl.
