Stadhouder Willem III

On the Castle Square, the equestrian statue of King- Stadhouder Willem III (1650-1702) has stood since 1921. The statue was made by the Antwerp artist Toon Dupuis. Willem III was Lord of Breda and Prince of Orange and completed the Castle of Breda.

Since 1921, the equestrian statue of King-Stadhouder Willem III (1650-1702) has stood in the Kasteelplein. The statue was created by the Antwerp artist Toon Dupuis. It stands on a six-metre high pedestal by Dirk Roosenburg. Willem III was Lord of Breda and Prince of Orange and completed the Castle of Breda. He married his cousin Mary Stuart in 1677 and later became King of England.

On the occasion of the two-hundredth anniversary of Willems death, a national committee commissioned a statue of him to be placed somewhere in the Netherlands. Due to Breda's connection to the Nassaus, the committee chose Breda.
