Molen De Korenbloem
In the past, almost every village had a grain mill, which was necessary because milling grain required a lot of energy, and energy was scarce in the lowlands. Cities therefore had many grain mills – just look at old maps – and industrial centres, such as the Zaan region, were filled with windmills. Foreigners looked on in amazement when they saw hundreds of mills operating at the same time. Everything was powered by wind energy: sawing wood, pressing oil, pumping water, grinding oak bark, and so on. Land reclamation without wind energy was absolutely unthinkable. In fact, wind energy held the place that electricity and oil do today.
Every village has its mill, every mill has its own history, and it would be a shame if that history were to be lost. And it's not just about the mill; it's also about the craftsman who had to keep the mill running: the miller, who also has his own history.
