Koningin Wilhelmina paviljoen
The exhibition is housed in the former Rijks-HBS, which was purchased by the KMA in 1902 and has since served as a governor's residence and library, among other things. The building has been thoroughly restored in recent years and was named the Queen Wilhelmina Pavilion in 2009.
Coming from the Valkenberg, you walk straight towards it, the Queen Wilhelmina Pavilion (KWP), known to locals in Breda as the old HBS. A striking and stately building on Kasteelplein. Built in 1867 according to the most revolutionary insights of that time, based on a design by the Breda city architect A.J.F. Cuypers. The building was established as housing for the first Breda 'Higher Citizen School' (HBS), an educational institution founded on the principles of the 19th-century liberal statesman Thorbecke that (initially with some restrictions) provided access to university studies.
Restoration
Due to structural defects, a thorough restoration was necessary, which was completed in 2008. On that occasion, the building was given an official name, following the tradition of the KMA, named after one of the members of the Royal Family, the Queen Wilhelmina Pavilion. Since then, the building has been home to the communication section of the Netherlands Defence Academy and a department of the defence recruitment organisation.
Equally important is the establishment of the permanent exhibition space of the Historical Collection Foundation in the building. This exhibition depicts the history of Breda Castle and its inhabitants over the years through prints, photos, documents, utensils of the cadets, and historical weapons and uniforms.
