Hercules

The statue of Hercules (a replica) is the only statue that remains of the seventeen statues that were placed there in the 17th century when the castle garden was redesigned.

In the seventeenth century, William III had Park Valkenberg, then still the castle garden of Breda Castle, redesigned. It became a garden in the French style with seventeen sandstone statues that were placed throughout the park in beds. Hercules, a figure from Greek mythology, was reportedly retrieved from the pond of the park in 1887 as the only remaining statue.
The Hercules currently in the park is already the second replica and is made of Italian marble. The original Hercules stands in the Holland Casino.
Colloquially, the statue is called Vuile Jan, due to his scant clothing.
