Bishop's Palace
The Bishop's Palace, since 1872 the official residence of the Bishop of Breda, is somewhat tucked away on Veemarktstraat. Here lived in the 16th century the treasurer-general of Prince Maurice and the mayor of the city of Breda, Godevaert Montens.
The Bishop's Palace, the official residence of the Bishop of Breda, is located on Veemarktstraat. The original name of this street was Gasthuisstraat. The street is first mentioned in a charter from 1340, making it one of the earliest recorded streets in Breda. Later, the name Veemarktstraat supplanted the original name.
Unfortunately, only the front of the Bishop's House (no. 46), which is slightly set back on Veemarktstraat, can be seen. Only the back retains its eighteenth-century character. In the sixteenth century, it was home to the General Treasurer of Prince Maurits and the mayor of the city of Breda, Godevaert Montens. Since 1872, it has been the residence of the bishop.
