The Parade - who would want to be?

Discover The Parade at the Stedelijk Museum Kielegat!

Information

Alaaf! Welcome to Stedelijk Museum Kielegat! Do you also want to shine in De Parade? Then feel free to step into Next (for free) and discover, design, fantasize and think: who would you like to be?

The Parade

During carnival, Breda transforms into Kielegat. The spectacle attracts visitors from everywhere. The streets turn red-orange, the people receive the key to the city, we choose our prince(ss), we determine who we want to be, and we celebrate together.

But carnival is more. Worldwide, there are similar traditions that revolve around group feeling, gender, and who you are – or want to be when social rules are turned upside down for once. In the project De Parade, photographer Vincen Beeckman investigates these rich traditions together with residents and organisations from Breda. From care institutions to community workshops, participants enrich the project with their ideas, artworks, and stories.

Carnival in NEXT
The Parade is in full development. In Next, you can see the first results from the project, which can be followed throughout the city until September 2026 – and you can take part! Design your own carnival emblem, put your statement on a beer coaster, and get a chance to win a photoshoot with Vincen Beeckman. Karreneval, let's celebrate together!
