Philosophical lecture in the Yellow House

As part of the art project Troost & Hoop, a lecture will be held in the Gele Huis. In this session, Eric van Waalwijk van Doorn will discuss the question, ‘Is peace more than just the absence or cessation of war?’ 

Eric van Waalwijk van Doorn examines what we associate with ‘peace’ and connects this to the ‘human paradox’: we are both individuals and social animals. He discusses whether peace without war is possible and how media, history, and stories shape our perception of the world. Starting from the Fall in Genesis, he looks at the human choice between good and evil and our fascination with violence, from the Colosseum to modern films. Finally, he explores with participants the role of technology and war throughout the centuries and poses the question: “Is peace possible without war?”
