In her first feature-length film, the science-fiction documentary Once an Alien, visual artist Semâ Bekirović follows her father to the country he fled from as a child. Mirza is an inventor and has a particular fascination with time travel. Together, they travel through Bosnia and Herzegovina in a camper. The country has changed a lot since Mirza left. When he wants to visit his homeland, he needs a time machine. Along the way, they pass through stunning landscapes and meet various people. In these encounters, it becomes clear that Mirza connects with them, not because they share the same “blood,” but through a shared sense of displacement, a nostalgic longing, the desire to return to another time. Personal stories alternate with surreal scenes. Mirza talks about his traumatic childhood, his inventions, and theories. He wears a “time travel suit” made of mirror-like fragments of CDs. Gradually, the boundary between fantasy and reality blurs, and a patchwork of different perspectives unfolds. It becomes evident that art and creativity are not a game for Mirza and Semâ, but a means of survival.
