Nassau Lecture: the siege of Breda
Information
The remains of 600 years of fortification construction found in over 50 years of archaeological research.
Hans de Kievith draws a connection to what the landscape looked like when Breda was surrounded by the constructed lines of enclosure. This allows archaeologists to place the traces and finds in their historical context. He elaborates further on his story from the Nassau lecture last year.
The siege by Spinola in 1624/1625, leading to the eventual surrender, was attributed to the military tactic of besieging a city rather than attacking it. This was also a difficult matter as the city of Breda was exceptionally well fortified.
How was it in other times?
Did Breda have an invincible fortress at all times? Since 1976, remains of the fortifications have been regularly found during archaeological research. The story begins around 1270 with the oldest fortifications and ends with the dismantling of the fortress in 1869/70.
Hans de Kievith provides an overview of the development of the city's defence and excavation results.
The church opens at 19:30.
