Maczek's Liberation March

In 2024, it will be 80 years since North Brabant was liberated. To mark this occasion, the walking club WIEGO, in collaboration with the Maczek Memorial Breda, is organising a walking tour from Baarle Nassau/Hertog via Alphen and Gilze/Prinsenbosch to Breda.

Information

General Maczek, along with his 1st Polish Armoured Division, liberated North Brabant in 1944 in collaboration with the Allies. The walk follows the route taken by the Polish liberators through the forests between Baarle and Breda during the liberation of North Brabant in October 1944. The route passes various war memorials and, for longer distances, also includes the AZC Gilze.

You can choose from a range of distances:

  • 34 km (start in Baarle between 8:00 and 9:15 am)
  • 27 km (start in Alphen between 9:00 and 10:30 am)
  • 18 km (start at AZC Gilze between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm)
  • 8.5 km (start at Mariakerk Breda between 12:00 and 2:30 pm).

The finish (no later than 5:00 pm) is at the Maczek Memorial on Ettensebaan in Breda for all distances. Every participant who completes the march will receive a memento. Upon presentation of the participant’s certificate, you can also visit the Memorial, which will remain open until 6:00 pm on 21 September 2024.

Participants can reach the starting points on their own or by public transport. It is also possible, for a fee, to use bus transport, which has been arranged from the Maczek Memorial on the morning of the march. For more details, please visit the website of the Maczek Liberation March.
