Donate your tear in the Grote Kerk of Breda

In the Grote Kerk of Breda, a specially designed permanent memorial has been created. Donate a tear and join in!

Information

15 March 2025 marks 5 years since the COVID-19 crisis was officially announced in the Netherlands. A temporary memorial has been established in the Grote Kerk Breda during this period to commemorate deceased loved ones. The continuously growing number of photos and candles demonstrates a significant and universal need to keep the memory of loved ones alive. Therefore, the temporary monument will be replaced by a specially designed permanent memorial.

To realise this permanent memorial, the Grote Kerk Breda has invited artists Margit Lukács (Breda) and Persijn Broersen (Delft) to create a new work. They have designed Tears of Breda, inspired by the symbolism of tears. Each tear is unique and tells a personal story. When magnified, tears all have their own structure. Thus, a tear of sorrow looks different from a tear of joy. These organic patterns of tears form the basis for the new memorial artwork in the Grote Kerk Breda.

Donate a tear

Everyone is welcome in the Grote Kerk of Breda to donate a tear. A selection of the donated tears will ultimately be incorporated into the artwork. After the summer, Tears of Breda will be unveiled, providing a space for everyone to light a candle, find a moment of peace, or come together.
