Ice skating on natural ice around Breda

  • Winter
  • Sport
  • Children
Every winter we hope that we can skate on natural ice again. There’s nothing wrong with ice rinks, but skating in the great outdoors truly makes ice skating enthusiasts happy. We’ve put together a little overview of some spots around Breda where you can skate on natural ice. As long as it has frozen long enough, of course, because safety comes first!

Vereniging IJsvermaak

Every autumn, the Vereniging IJsvermaak floods the fields at Castle Bouvigne in the hope that it can be skated on during the following winter. When that moment arrives, the first five days are reserved for members of IJsvermaak. After that, everyone is welcome to skate (for a fee).

IJsvermaak has a 400-meter track for recreational and speed skaters. There is a designated area where the youth can play ice hockey, as well as a large playground for young and old. Additionally, there is a separate corner where children can learn to skate. Since the entire ice rink can be illuminated, the rink is also open in the evenings.

De Kogelvanger

In the Mastbos, just past Grand Café de Kogelvanger, there are two large, fairly shallow ponds that are soon safe enough for skating. If the skating days fall on the weekend, there is often a hot chocolate and snacks stall. And with a bit of luck, a lovely winter sun shines over the ponds.

Galderseweg, a little past the Kogelvanger, turn right into the path.

Estate Wolfslaar

Estate Wolfslaar is a beautiful and atmospheric estate on the southern edge of Breda. When the ponds there freeze over, it's great for ice skating. Next to the estate is Farm Wolfslaar with the catering facility Charlotte's Garden House. A lovely place to warm up with a hot chocolate.

Strijbeek Heath

The Strijbeekse heath is an extensive heathland area between Breda and the Belgian border (near Ulvenhout). There are several beautiful pools here that are very popular for ice skating. The most well-known is the Zwarte Goor. It can be reached via the Goudbergseweg. The nearby Smokkelaar is a great place to relax afterwards.

Wilhelmina Park

If you want to skate close to the centre of Breda, then head to the ice at Wilhelminapark by one of the two ponds. At Café Parkzicht, on the corner of Paul Windhausenweg, the hot chocolate is already ready!

Ice Club Terheijden

At the Molen de Arend in Terheijden, the IJsclub Terheijden ensures that when it has frozen enough, a beautiful ice surface is available. When the ice rink opens, the first day is designated for members of the IJsclub. After that, all other ice skating enthusiasts can lace up their skates.
