This year, BredaPhoto, in collaboration with photography partner FOTODOK, presents a group exhibition of seven relatively young artists: Grounding — Stories of Migration.

StadsGalerij has a rich BredaPhoto history and, with its distinctive appearance, is the centre of artistic charm in the former Building F of the Chassékazerne Breda. This year, BredaPhoto, together with photography partner FOTODOK, presents a group exhibition of seven relatively young artists: Grounding — Stories of Migration. They highlight the experiences of the first generation of migrants and their settling in the Netherlands.

We would like to introduce you to the photographers working in the Netherlands:

  • Giya Makondo-Wills explores the story of Kanaleneiland with Neighbourhood, where she settled in 2020. She invites the audience to reflect on what makes someone a good immigrant. Utrecht's Kanaleneiland was originally built for white natives. Now it is the site of a multicultural future.
  • My Mom Wants To Go Back Home documents the winding journey that Hanna Hrabarska and her mother Iryna were forced to take following Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
  • In Entre Dòmi i Sawaka (Between Dòmi and Sawaka), Kevin Osepa seeks the connections that bind him to a place that has shaped him: Domi, a neighbourhood in Willemstad, Curaçao.
  • Marwan Magroun: ‘For children with a bi-cultural background, it rarely feels as though generational notes from parents are truly together in photos.’ While that intimacy did indeed exist. Intimacy shows tender images of couples from his parents' generation.
  • Nael Quraishi juxtaposes his life in the Netherlands with his life in Pakistan, where he lived during his youth. With This is, after all, home, he looks through the lens of a post-migrant from his living room window and observes his surroundings.
  • The grandparents of Sebastian Koudijzer & Tyler Koudijzer are direct descendants of contract labourers themselves. The Sugared Enterprise zooms in on places where personal stories intertwine with narratives of a colonial past.
  • Thana Faroq examines the personal stories and emotional realities of a small group of young women who, like herself, fled to the Netherlands in How shall we greet the sun.
