The 75-year-old Guus Rombouts

(Princenhage, 1949) will be exhibiting in September at the Princenhaags Museum.&nbsp;He studied at the Academy for Visual Arts in Tilburg, where he obtained his MO-B degree in Visual Education and worked for 36 years as a teacher. Since 1973, he has been creating sculptures.
 
Initially, he carved in wood and stone, but over time, assemblage became his means of expression. By rearranging existing objects, their original meanings are lost and they gain a new plastic identity within his sculptures. This makes him more of a sculptural builder.The play with form and space to give a new space and meaning is characteristic of his perspective. A poem serves as an essential complement. The sustainable reuse of materials, unlocking the artistic possibilities in a new form of creation is his strength.

He works with wood, iron, brass, copper, and anything that comes his way. Out of wonder, he approaches the world. Accidental encounters with objects trouvés. Never predictable. Composition and meaning arise during the process of becoming. He searches and finds and is a circular sculptor. Reused objects awaken to a second life within his methodology. Recurring themes include: the couple, cats, encounter, pilgrim, and watcher.

Now we can speak of a retrospective over 50 years, on the occasion of his 75th birthday. One more journey through his world. Sharing his view on imagination.
