Tidied up Breda

  • Sustainable
You see it more and more in Breda: people cleaning up litter. Several initiatives are committed to a cleaner Breda, including Opgeruimd Breda. "If you're out for a walk, why not take some litter with you? In the meantime, 685 people are already participating in Opgeruimd Breda." We discuss it with initiator Peter van der List.

Cleaning up litter is no longer dull.

“In March 2020, I saw a few people in my street cleaning up litter. I thought: what a great idea, I can do that too! Together with Gert van der Hart, I started Opgeruimd Breda. The idea? To make Breda cleaner! Everyone can help out, wherever, whenever, and as often as they want,” Peter says.

“I personally clean up rubbish around the Planciusplein every week. Each week I have another full bin bag. It feels good, this cleaning up. You are outside enjoying the fresh air and doing something good for the neighbourhood and the environment. Ultimately, I hope that with Opgeruimd Breda, we can motivate people not to throw their cans or plastic packaging on the ground anymore.”

“In the meantime, 685 people are already participating in Opgeruimd Breda. Quite a lot, isn't it? Picking up litter is no longer considered boring; more and more people are doing it. Regular clean-up events are also organised through Opgeruimd Breda. You go out with a group for 1.5 hours, picking up rubbish at the same time. It's quite fun too! And you also meet new people this way.”

Would you like to contribute to a cleaner Breda? You can sign up for Opgeruimd Breda via the Facebook page. The Municipality of Breda provides grabbers and rubbish bags on loan. You can deposit the rubbish bags in your own container for residual waste. Do you often walk in a different neighbourhood? You can have two extra containers added to your card so that you don't have to drag the rubbish bags back to your own home.
