Staying at Guesthouse Munnickenheide

Are you looking for ideas for an unforgettable visit to the beautiful city of Breda and its surroundings, including a lovely stay? Then you are in the right place!

A charming campsite as a base.

At Gastenverblijf Munnickenheide, you can enjoy an exceptionally rural overnight stay in the Brabant nature. It is a great base to relax and enjoy the outdoor life in Breda. Within a radius of 9 km, you will find Breda, the Biesbosch, and an unrestrained part of the Zuiderwaterlinie.

    How it started

A few years ago, owners Gerry and Gerjo Leijten started their guesthouse. Together with their three daughters, they live in a super beautiful place. They also wanted others to enjoy this location.

They converted the former pig farm into a unique accommodation with many possibilities. Although the farm is no longer a farm, chickens and pigs still roam around. The best part about running a business? Deciding for yourself which direction to go in with input from guests!

    About Gerry and Gerjo

When Gerjo was 21 years old, she moved to Gerry’s farm in Terheijden. Upon arrival, you are warmly welcomed by Gerjo. She loves to talk about the business, and you notice that Brabant hospitality is at the heart of everything. This, along with personal contact, is very important to Gerjo. This is also evident from the cups of tea with treats that are already waiting for you in your accommodation. You feel very welcome right from the start.

Gerjo ensures that the (online) marketing runs smoothly and handles incoming requests. Gerry’s role in the guest accommodation is to make sure that the stays are in perfect order. He repairs and renovates, ensures you have everything you need for a campfire, and maintains the garden.

    The cozy guesthouse

At Munnickenheide, there is something for everyone. You can stay in a luxury room of 50 m2 with private facilities or in one of the comfort rooms of 30 m2 located in the converted barn. Additionally, there are four cool Pods available and the option to set up your own tent on the spacious campsite. Finally, there are five country-style studios with private kitchens, available for longer stays. The location is also extremely suitable for group accommodation. Gerry and Gerjo try to think of everything and everyone!

The converted pig farm features a large space where a ‘to go’ vending machine is available for passersby and a spot for rent for various purposes. The space is cozily decorated with, among other things, homemade paintings by Gerjo with relevant themes.

    For whom?

There is a place for every target group at the guesthouse. Initially, the entrepreneurs expected that the guesthouse would attract many older people. The opposite has proven to be true: in the first years, it mainly attracted many groups. Now, the guests primarily consist of young people, including couples, for whom nature is a top priority.

The location is also used for business purposes. So, business overnight stays, meetings, training, or team-building workshops are possible. Munnickenheide provides your customised meeting package. Furthermore, the location is very popular with passing visitors, such as cyclists.

    Sleeping in a cosy Pod

Wondering what a Pod is? It offers the best of both worlds: the authentic camping experience and the comfort of luxury sleeping, also known as glamping! For traditional campers, but also for modern holidaymakers, Pods are a great place to sleep for a long or short holiday. The Pods are comfortably furnished with a nice bed and a table with two chairs. Each Pod offers a beautiful and wide view. And you might not believe it, but there is plenty of space!

In the evening, you can enjoy the peace with a warm hot chocolate by a fire pit at the picnic table. Too cold outside? Sheep wool has been used for insulation, and each Pod is equipped with a heater. Very cosy! There are also plenty of blankets available to keep warm. A super fun place to overnight in a different way.

    Luxury facilities

There is no shortage of luxury at Munnickenheide. Even when you camp here, you can call it glamping. The accommodation features a beautiful and tidy sanitary building, just a short distance from the lodgings. In addition, there is a cosy communal breakfast room and kitchen. The wonderful local breakfast includes cheese from cheese farm 't Bosch, honey from a local beekeeper, and bread from the artisan baker Van Dongen (three times winner of the best Brabant sausage roll!).

Munnickenheide also has a meeting room for groups of up to 18 people.

    The unique location

Munnickenheide is located at the Munnikenhof in the countryside of Terheijden. There are many activities and the surroundings with forests, fields, meadows, and water are beautiful.

Munnickenheide is situated along the Zuiderwaterlinie between the lines of the Munnikenhof and Den Hout. These are the two oldest original defensive walls with their original visible shapes and existing lunettes. The guesthouse is also located at the foot of National Park de Biesbosch, where you can enjoy sailing, cycling, and walking. Of course, Breda is just around the corner, but Oosterhout is also worth a visit.

    Extraordinary arrangements

Gerry and Gerjo regularly offer various, special arrangements for both outdoor enthusiasts and food lovers.

They collaborate with, among others, Pannenkoekenhuis Koeckers, the outdoor survival course Pact by Prinse, swimming pools and ice rink from Optisport, and Spa One: the largest sauna complex in North Brabant.

    Village Brewery Terheijden

On the grounds of Munnickenheide, in the old pigsty, you will also find Dorpsbrouwerij Terheijden. This brewery believes in honest products with a green and local character. In addition to brewing its own beers, the brewery is also available for contract brewing. This leads to unique beers, such as Molenkoekbier: beer created in collaboration with Molen de Arend and Liniebock: suited to the location.

    Sustainability and Ambition

A theme that you can no longer ignore these days: sustainability. At Munnickenheide, they separate waste and try to encourage guests to do the same by using various containers. There are solar panels and a dedicated charging station. The pods are, as mentioned earlier, insulated with sheep wool. This is part of their effort to reuse materials. They also regularly receive items from the thrift store.

Gerry and Gerjo continuously think about how they can improve their business. They saw the coronavirus crisis as a good opportunity to reassess the accommodation and, for example, expand it with a private wellness option that can be booked with your stay. Furthermore, they would ideally like to achieve continuity, so they have year-round income from the beautiful guest accommodation.

    Discover the surroundings

    The Spinolaschans:

On the way to the guesthouse, you stop at the Spinolaschans. This is a fortification from the 80 Years' War. In 1624, the Spanish army besieged Breda in order to starve the city into surrender. To achieve this, the commander-in-chief Spinola had two fortifications built. The Spinolaschans is the one that has remained intact.

The elevated walkway offers you a splendid view of the fort and the surrounding landscape. Definitely worth a visit to get some fresh air or if you enjoy history.

    Linie van het Munnikenhof:

Running through Brabant is the Zuiderwaterlinie, the oldest, longest, and most used water defense line in the Netherlands. It is a defensive system of fortified cities, forts, fortifications, dikes, and sluices. Through traffic could only go via the lines, thus keeping the enemy at bay.

The Linie van het Munnikenhof is a peaceful stretch of the line, where no fighting has ever occurred. It makes for a pleasant walk from the guesthouse.

    Gourmets

From the grounds of the guesthouse, you can walk directly towards the Linie van het Munnikenhof. If you follow this, you will arrive at Pannenkoekenhuis Koeckers. Delicious pancakes with everything imaginable! For example, try an Indonesian pancake or a Mexican pancake. It's also a super fun place for children!

Restaurant De Buren is a restaurant that the owners of the guesthouse also recommend. Here you can enjoy tapas at your leisure. Another tip is the atmospheric Brasserie Woods: during your lunch or dinner, you'll enjoy the forests of the Vrachelse heath.
