Going for a walk and bike ride in 't Ginneken

  • Ginneken
Nature literally lies around the corner in Ginneken. Before you know it, you find yourself in the tranquillity of the Mastbos or Markdal for a nice walk or bike ride.

The backyard of Breda

The Mastbos, created by Hendrik III of Nassau, is also known as the 'back garden of Breda'. From Duivelsbruglaan, you can walk straight into the forest! People from Breda, as well as many nature lovers from elsewhere, use the forest for walking and cycling, for sports and relaxation, or just to enjoy nature.

Did you know that... the Mastbos is one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands? Count Hendrik III of Nassau had the forest planted in 1515 with seeds from the Scots pine from the German city of Nuremberg.

Markdal

The Markdal owes its name to the river De Mark, which flows through the meadows south of Breda. To prevent waterlogging, Staatsbosbeheer has allowed the Mark to meander again. The natural areas along the riverbanks collect excess water. This allows nature to thrive.

Going for a walk or bike ride through Markdal

It's wonderful to walk or cycle through the Markdal. There is a lot of greenery around the water. The water creates marshy banks in various places. You can enter the Markdal via the Duivelsbrug on foot or by bike. You can go further into Belgium, but the border town of Meerseldreef with its terraces and playground near 'de Paters' is a nice place to catch your breath. You can make the walk or bike ride along the Mark as long as you want. You can simply turn around when you've had enough!

Route length: as long as you want!
Starting point: Duivelsbrug, Breda
